Testing the Cabbage Soup Diet - Day 2

Day 2 of the diet of cabbage soup and today was a bit 'difficult. I am a bit 'tired and very dizzy (especially early in the morning) and I had a headache, I finally resorted to ibuprofen to knock out.

The first thing I had a veritable wave of nausea, which I initially thought was to stay away from classes today, but soon passed. Initially I thought, "Well, there you go, for food, but then I concluded that theprobably my supplement of zinc, which touched me the same way I once got an empty stomach - obviously swallowed my soup was not enough to kiss. I just returned my second day, so we will soon know if the soup.

I have to say late yesterday I was pretty tired of soup, and this morning was a real effort to force. But at home I remembered that people had suggested pureeing it (the basic recipeate a rich soup) to the more appealing, so I'll be the last right mixed down and was actually very nice.

supplementary food today is the fruit of all kinds, including a baked potato, rather mud on loading a thermos of soup, I took a couple stalks of celery and two carrots peeled to college with me to munch on.

Once again I am impressed by what I have taste and natural sweetness of the fruit - probably just enjoycontrast to the mild soup. I'm saving my baked potatoes as an evening treat (I'm really starting to want flour, which is probably for real after two days, but not insurmountable).

Summer Slaws Shrink Shape

Summer is coming and with it, a season of summer picnics, barbeques and holiday gatherings. Many times, we don't eat as well as we should at all these cookouts. But all is not lost. What picnic is complete without a delicious salad, specifically a cabbage slaw.

Cabbage slaws are a great way to gain the nutritional benefits of cabbage. Cabbage is full of fiber and believe it or not, vitamin C. It is also contains almost a full days supply of vitamin K. There is also evidence to suggest that cruciferous veggies, like cabbage help to eliminate toxins in our bodies.  And since cruciferous vegetables are most nutritious eaten raw, bringing a cabbage slaw to a picnic is a win, win situation.

The main problem with slaws is that they are full of fat and calories. But they don't have to be. The following two recipes use a small amount of yogurt instead of mayo. This makes them lower in fat and calories. Try these 2 delicious cabbage slaws. Each one also contains grapes or pineapple, another nutritional bonus.

Cabbage Slaw

2 cups shredded cabbage
2/3 cup red seedless grapes
¼ cup walnuts chopped
2 Tablespoon apple juice
1 Tablespoon sesame tahini
1 Tablespoon yogurt
Dash cinnamon

Combine first 3 ingredients in a medium bowl.  Mix remaining ingredients in blender on medium speed. Stir into cabbage mixture. Makes 4 servings.

Cabbage & Pineapple slaw

2 cups shredded cabbage
½ cup chopped pineapple
2 Tablespoon yogurt (plain)
1/8 teaspoon thyme
Dash nutmeg

Toss cabbage and pineapple with the yogurt, thyme and nutmeg. Serve chilled. 4 servings.

Korean Not Real Kimchi Salad

I never really liked kimchi to be honest. You know, that spicy pickled cabbage with specks of red all over. The fact that it was always stored in a huge jar of murky vinegar (I think) didn't help entice my senses either. Kimchi, to me, always tasted like waxy spicy sour cabbage. I just didn't like it.

But Korean kimchi salad is a whole different topic.

Don't be fooled because it has the word "kimchi" in its name. Korean kimchi salad is a fresh refreshing mix of garden veggies with a "not so spicy" sweet dressing. It is nothing - I repeat NOTHING - like regular old kimchi.

The first day I tried it (the same night my mom came home with Korean style grilled chicken!), I almost finished the whole carton of it. Yes, it is that good. It's sweet, crisp, light, and refreshing - the perfect appetizer for any occasion. I highly recommend everyone to try this dish. You won't be disappointed.

Here's the recipe!

Ingredients

1 lb cabbage

1 Tbsp salt

8 oz radish

1 carrot

2 cucumbers

6 Tbsp vinegar

3 Tbsp sugar

1 tsp salt

1 Tbsp Korean brand hot pepper paste (adjust amount to taste)

Minced garlic (adjust amount to taste)

Sesame seeds (adjust amount to taste)

Cut off cabbage root and take off each leaf carefully from cabbage. Boil the whole cabbage (until it is cooked but still with a snap) and then put leaves in an ice bath. Cut the radish and carrot into julienne strips. Cut the iced cabbage into thin strips. Mix vinegar, sugar, salt, hot pepper paste, and garlic in a bowl. Marinate all the veggies in the dressing and garnish with sesame seeds.

Enjoy!

Cabbage Soup Diet - Diet Review - Pros, Cons

Overview

The Cabbage Soup Diet is a controversial weight loss approach advising an exclusive consumption of a low-calories cabbage soup over a period of seven days. Inspiring many imitators using similar principles, it claims to produce weight loss results of 10 lbs in a week.

Cabbage Soup Recipe

6 Large onions (green)
2 Peppers (green)
1 or 2 cans of tomatoes (diced or whole)
3 Carrots
1 Container (10 oz. or so) Mushrooms
1 bunch of celery
1 half head of cabbage
1 package soup mix (Lipton)
1 or 2 cubes of bouillon (optional)
1 48oz can tomato juice (optional)
Season with salt, pepper, curry, garlic powder, parsley

The Plan

Day One- Soup and as much fruit as you want, except bananas.
Day Two- Soup and vegetables including one potato with a little butter.
Day Three- Soup and fruit plus vegetables, except potatoes and bananas.
Day Four- Soup and up to eight bananas and unlimited skim milk.
Day Five- Soup and up to 20 ounces of beef and as many as six tomatoes.
Day Six- Soup and all the beef and vegetables as you want (no potatoes).
Day Seven- Soup and brown rice, vegetables (no potatoes) and unsweetened fruit juice.

Pros

Quick Weight Loss: If you have a wedding, or high school reunion to go to in the next week or so, and you need to fit into that dress...this might be ok to try.

Cons

Unsustainable: There is no way of keeping up this diet in the long term, and isn't long term weight loss what we're all after?

Could Make You Fatter: Research shows that we tend to store calories more efficiently after periods of starvation. I.E. You lose 10lbs this week but gain 12lbs in the next two.

Bottom Line

This is a starvation diet plain and simple. It might take off a couple pounds in the short term but it will surely hurt you in the long run, and will likely add pounds rather than take them away, by messing with your body's metabolism. What works in the long term is a sensible balanced eating plan, focusing on portion control and moderate exercise.

Cabbage Soup Diet Guidelines

The Cabbage Soup Diet is based on a 7-day diet program that allows a person to eat as much cabbage soup as they want while greatly restricting the intake of high calorie foods. It is a classic example of a "starvation diet" and it is not recommended. Even if you do decide to try this starvation diet, you should never ever do it longer than 7 days.

Cabbage Soup Recipe:

5 green onions.
1 green pepper.
1 can of diced tomatoes.
4 carrots.
1 container of mushrooms.
1 bunch of celery.
1/2 head of cabbage.
1 package Lipton soup mix.
1 cube of beef bouillon.
1 48oz can of vegetable juice (like V8.)
8 cups of water.
Season to taste with salt, pepper, and any other spices you may like.

This is only a basic recipe, you can really add & subtract things based on your own experimentation, to see what you like and what you don't like. The directions are simple. You throw all of these ingredients together in a big pot and let it cook on low heat for about 2 hours.

Cabbage Soup Diet Day By Day Guidelines

(Eat all of the cabbage soup you want, every day.)

Day 1: Eat all of the fruit you want except bananas. You can eat nothing else but fruit & your soup.

Day 2: Eat all of the vegetables you want except for peas, corn, and potatoes. Eat only vegetables & your soup.

Day 3: This day is like a mix of Day 1 & Day 2. You can eat both veggies & fruits along with your soup. Again avoid peas, corn, potatoes, & bananas. Nothing else!

Day 4: Eat as many as 8 bananas & drink as many glasses of skim milk as you want. You eat only bananas & your soup along with drinking your skim milk.

Day 5: This day is all about beef & tomatoes (and the soup!) You should eat between 10 and 20 ounces of beef and up to 6 tomatoes. Don't eat any veggies or fruits other than tomatoes.

Day 6: Eat all of the beef & veggies you want along with your soup of course. Again do not eat peas, corn, or potatoes.

Day 7: Eat brown rice & vegetables along with your soup. No meat & no fruit.

Hopefully having seen what this diet consists of you realize that it is not right for you. A crazy starvation diet like this will only slow down your metabolism and cause you to gain more weight in the end. You should choose a sensible diet that will have long lasting results instead.

Does the Cabbage Soup Diet Work?

Does the cabbage soup diet work where most other diets fail? Certainly the cabbage soup diet has been around for years often known by several different names. Here are my experiences and what you might expect.

Surely if one just ate soup for a week or so, that would be a painful way to lose some weight. Actually that isn't what this is at all. That soup functions just as a filler.

You eat all the cabbage soup you want whenever you want it and that way you never really get that empty feeling that drives you to quit. Key to the plan is a strict schedule for what you can eat on each of seven days.

Each day you eat just certain foods and leave off everything else. The foods allowed on each day changes as the week passes. If you look at the total variety of foods eaten in a week, there really is quite a choice. The challenge is sticking to just what is allowed each day.

Key to the fast weight change is what you can't eat. Clearly absent are breads, desserts and most, but not all, carbohydrates. What you end up with is a restricted calorie and restricted fat eating plan. That's the key to the results, not something magical in cabbage soup.

Certainly not a smart long-term eating plan, this is a way to eat that shows fast results. Is that worth the trouble, especially since yo-yo dieting actually results in weight gain, not weight loss, over time? Could be... Here's my theory.

Losing weight in a sustainable fashion is so slow progress is almost impossibly slow. You change your eating and lifestyle habits and then see nearly no results. What is the temptation? Just forget it...

Another way to go is to throw in a short eating plan occasionally that will really let you see the scales move. Even thought the plan does not by itself result in long-term weight drop, it may fit within the perfect route to health and fitness.

So does the soup diet work?

It does, in my experience, let you watch the scales drop fast in a fairly painless manner. Blended with a long-term eating plan, it can serve as a useful part of both losing weight fast and losing weight slowly.

Beef Barley Vegetable Soup

A truly great soup for every occasion, beef barley vegetable soup is packed with protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and fiber. Aside from being really good for you, this is an amazing tasting soup that can be served at any time during the day. This soup is a meal by itself, perfect served with bread and salad, or as a side to a sandwich or dinner offering.

Despite the long list of ingredients, this is a fairly easy dish to prepare. The beef roast and barley are slow cooked in a crock pot to bring out the flavors and tenderize the tougher cut of beef. For convenience, the recipe calls for frozen mixed vegetables. These can be swapped out for your favorite fresh vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli, corn, and green beans. Most supermarkets sell great beef broth in 4-cup packages. Substitute one of these fine store bought products or homemade beef stock for the cold water and beef bouillon cubes and take this soup to a whole new level.

Cooks Notes: Substitute real beef stock for the water and beef bouillon, and 1 pound of your favorite fresh vegetables for the frozen mixed vegetables, if desired.

4 cups Cold Water
4 cubes Beef Bouillon Cube
1 tablespoon White Sugar
1/4 teaspoon Fresh Ground Black Pepper
1 (28 ounces) can chopped Stewed Tomatoes
Coarse Salt, to taste

Cabbage Growing

Some Tips for Cabbage Growing

Cabbage growing are the fourth most farmed vegetable in the United States but most people tend to grow the same varieties. Cabbages are categorized by head shape, the most commonly grown being flat-head and round. Cabbage comes in green, white and purple varieties. Cabbage growing is relatively easy and here are some tips to get you started!

Preparing the Soil

Cabbages need to be planted in firm soil so it's best not to dig up the soil for a few months before planting the cabbages. Choose a sunny spot which has not had any brassica (cabbage, kale, brussels sprouts, swede or other hardy plants) planted within the past few years. Choose a spot with full sun or light shade for successful cabbage growing.

Work some compost or manure into your chosen spot. Apply a fertilizer a week before planting the cabbages. Remove any stones or weeds with a rake just before planting.

Planting the Cabbages

It is best to space your cabbage rows six inches apart and sow the seeds thinly at a depth of about half an inch. Thin the seedlings to a foot apart so they don't become thin or weak. You can use the seedlings for spring greens.

Water the cabbages if the weather is dry and hoe them carefully to get rid of weeds. A good cabbage growing technique is to water the cabbages evenly so they don't split. When the heads start to form, you can apply a liquid fertilizer. If it is windy, you can mound the soil upwards towards the stems to protect the cabbages.

Harvest Time

Cabbages are ready to be harvested when they are firm to the touch and the heads are fully formed. Leave the wide, outer leaves and only cut the head. If you are growing spring or summer varieties, you can make an X in the stump and grow a second crop of cabbages from these. Cabbages should all be harvested in November and stored for winter use. Place them stem side up in a box lined with straw, and keep them somewhere between freezing and 45ºF. That way, they should keep until March.

Cabbage Pests

The main cabbage growing pest threat comes from cabbage worms. They are the same color as some types of cabbage but you can see them quite easily and pick them off by hand.

Easy Cabbage Varieties to Grow

Red Acre and Red Delight are easy to grow purple cabbage varieties. Late Flat Dutch and Early Jersey Wakefield are also straightforward to grow and are very popular.

Cabbage growing is a lot of fun and can also be very rewarding when you present your friends and family with your tasty produce! There are thousands of delicious recipes calling for cabbage. Cabbage lasts for about a week so if you have a lot of cabbage, you can freeze it by choosing crisp heads and shredding them. Blanch the cabbage for a minute, cool and pack into freezer bags.

If you have some spare space in your garden, why not have a go at cabbage growing!

Cabbage Soup Detox Diet

A cabbage soup detox diet is a good way to cleanse your system and remove toxins periodically. This diet is known by several names including the Mayo Clinic Diet, the Russian Peasant Diet, TJ's Miracle Diet, the Banana Diet, and the Sacred Heart Diet. Cabbage soup is a filler for this diet. You can eat all the soup you want, but the diet includes a variety of other foods as well.

Totally absent from the diet are all processed foods. Also carbohydrates are very limited and sugar is out too. Even though the diet includes a variety of foods, the foods are all quite simple and basic. It is described as a detox diet but it is also a weight loss diet too. The claim is that you will lose ten pounds in seven days. Many people verify that this is possible.

The plus is that you get plenty to eat so there is little chance of really getting hungry. You'll be eating fruits and vegetables plus meat on some days and potatoes and rice too. Though you may very well crave your favorite foods that aren't allowed, you only do the diet for a week. This is not a long-term way to eat. It's just a short-term cleansing diet and a way to drop a few pounds in a hurry. Many people feel better after eliminating refined foods for a short time and that is what this diet plan does.

If you have determined to change the way you eat this diet plan is a good way to start. The plan will get you off to a start on your weight loss goals and motivate you to progress to a long-term eating plan. Combine a sensible eating plan with exercise and you can feel better and drop the weight you need to lose.

Each day of the diet you eat only certain foods plus all the cabbage soup you want. No exotic foods are required. No expensive pills or supplements. Just basic foods plus the soup. And you can make the soup in many different ways depending on what you like. This is a relatively painless detox diet and weight loss plan that will work for you.

How to Make a Simple Cabbage Soup

It's surprisingly tough to find a cabbage soup recipe that doesn't involve this wacky diet trend, The Cabbage Soup Diet. That sounds like the most boring diet ever. I was looking for a simple cabbage soup recipe for those of us that simply want cabbage soup and not a fad diet.

Here's what I found. It's hearty, tasty and very simple to make.

You need: 1/3 pound of bacon (preferably Canadian), 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter, one medium finely chopped onion, 2 large peeled and diced Yukon potatoes, 5 1/2 cups of chicken broth or chicken stock, 4 Turkish bay leaves, 2 teaspoons of kosher salt, a 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper and the cabbage. You only need a 1/2 of a small head of cabbage, thinly sliced in 1/2 inch pieces.

It's a super simple recipe. Just cook the bacon in a small sauce pan with water by bringing to a boil, skimming the top and simmering for about seven minutes. If you got a different style of bacon cook it however you choose to. When finished just drain and cut into small chunks. Just put it aside for after the rest of the soup is prepared.

Get out a large heavy stock pot and melt the butter. Add the onion and saute until soft. This will take about three minutes. Next, add the potato and saute for two minutes. Add the stock, leaves and salt and pepper. Bring this to a boil and then reduce heat, to medium, cover and simmer for 8 - 10 minutes. Make sure potatoes get pretty soft.

Add the cabbage now and simmer for five more minutes. You can throw the bay leaves away now.

If you'd like the soup to be a puree, you can do that now. Take three batches and blend in a blender until smooth. Then it's ready, just return to pot, warm an serve!

It's a simple recipe, but I think you'll find that it's tasty and perfect for a cold winters night!

Since the bulk of food consumed during the diet is the soup, it is important to choose a recipe that you find tasty, as you will be eating this for 7 days. Since everyone has different tastes and preferences, there are a number of different recipes that may be tried and used.

Here are some recipes used for the Cabbage Soup Diet.

1 bunch basil

Boil up the soup for short (7-8 minutes) then take it away from your hot plate. Stir in the low-fat yoghurt. Taste with lemon juice, salt and pepper and let it brew 2-3 minutes on your hot plate (switched off). When serving, sprinkle some pecorino on your soup for a great tasty.

Ground Pork Gyoza

Ingredients:

* 12 oz of Chinese or normal cabbage (about half a head)

* 12 oz ground pork

* 2 long green onions or scallion

* 1 pkg of gyoza wrappers

* 1 tbsp minced ginger, 1 tsp minced garlic

* 1 tbsp sesame oil

* 1/2 tsp sea salt

* a pinch of pepper and a dash of soy sauce

* a pinch of used green tea leaves

Prep Time: 45 min

Cooking Time: 10 min

Instructions:
1. Wash the cabbage leaf by leaf, and cut the hard center part out of each leaf. You can use these pieces later in miso soup--a perfect complement to your gyoza dinner. Dry the cabbage leaves thoroughly; you don't want to have a wet mixture.

2. Mince the garlic, green onions and cabbage.

3. Place the ground pork in a bowl. Then add the following ingredients and mix well: sesame oil, green onion, ginger, garlic, green tea leaves, salt and pepper.

4. Add the cabbage and mix well. Voila! you now have a gyoza filling.

5. Finally, wrap the gyoza. Using a spoon, place a dollop in the center of the wrap. Be careful not to use too much as this will make it difficult to wrap neatly.

6. Wet the edge of the wrapper with your finger using a dip of water.

7. Fold the wrapper in half and pinch in the middle so that the edges stick. Push the end in and pinch the bottom edge closed.

8. Fold the top edge so that it's pleated on both sides.

9. Then do the same on the other end. Pinch the first edge.

10. Then push the other edge out into a pleat and pinch closed.

There are many ways to wrap gyoza-Explore and a way that works for you. It may take a few times, but once you get a hang of it, it's really easy.

11. Fry them. Heat the frying pan well over medium heat. Boil water in a kettle at the same time. Place the gyoza in the frying pan. (You'll probably need to cook them in 2 or 3 batches as all of the gyoza will not fit at the same time. ) Then, pour in enough of the boiling water to cover the gyoza about 2/3 of the way up.

12. Cover the pan and cook for around 3 minutes over high heat.

13. Cook uncovered till the bottom of gyoza is nice and golden brown.

14. Serve with soy sauce, Japanese S&B's Layu (hot chili oil), rice vinegar and or Chinese hot chili sauce.
